Srila Prabhupada – At various times people have called him a scholar, a philosopher, a cultural ambassador, a prolific author, a religious leader, a spiritual teacher, a social critic, and a holy man.

In truth, he was all these things and more.

Srila Prabhupada set out for America in 1965 and established the International Society for Krishna Consciousness at the age of sixty-nine.

Know Srila Prabhupada's Story

Birth

Srila Prabhupada, known as His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, appeared in this world in Calcutta, India, on Nandotsava, the annual festival day celebrating Krishna’s birth, in year 1896. From early childhood, Srila Prabhupada showed clear signs of pure devotion to Lord Sri Krishna. At the tender age of five, he single-handedly organized a neighborhood Ratha-yatra festival to glorify Lord Jagannatha. With his enthusiasm and ecstatic love for Lord Krishna, Srila Prabhupada engaged the entire neighborhood in chanting

Initial Education &

Gandhian Movement

Prabhupada attended Scottish Church College in Calcutta, which was regulated by the British. Later, he joined Gandhi’s Non-cooperation Movement and refused to accept his diploma from that college as a type of grievance, although he had completed all the requirements for the degree. After this, a friend of his father, Dr Bose, made him a manager of his chemical company.

Spiritual Master

He first met his spiritual master, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Gosvami, in Calcutta in 1922. Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati, a well-known spiritual scholar and the founder of sixty-four Gaudiya Mathas (Vedic institutes), appreciated Srila Prabhupada, a young man and convinced him to commemorate his life by teaching Vedic knowledge.

Influencing the

Western World

At age sixty-nine, with forty rupees and a suitcase of his Bhagavatam commentaries – the first ever in English – he aimed to introduce “India’s message of peace and goodwill” to the western world. He departed from India on a ship named 'Jaldutta' suffered 3 heart attacks in midway but determined in his mission to preach Krishna consciousness philosophy to Western countries and fulfilling the order of His Spiritual Master.

Hare Krishna Movement

In 1966 he established an institution formally 'International Society for Krishna consciousness'. In the successive 11 years, he orbited the entire world around 14 times. He disseminated the teaching of Lord Krishna to countless people of different continents.

Every Town And Village

Community of different cultural backgrounds, sects or religions taken and discerned very genuinely and commemorated his life to push the movement. He demonstrated that this Krishna consciousness is not dealing with bodily designations, no matter one is Hindu, Muslim, Christian or Buddhist, it is for everyone.
